It takes a well-organized, experienced and dedicated team of quality people to be a good Design/Build Construction firm. Most clients think our people make Whitt the best. Here are some of the services provided and the people who are dedicated to satisfying our customers.
In 1980, Steve and Debbie Whitt sold their home and furniture business in Newport News and moved the family to a 19th century farmhouse in Mathews County, Virginia. They spent the next year restoring their new home. Steve, having grown up in the construction and cabinet business, then started a home improvement business remodeling houses in the local area. In 1984, they purchased an historic three-story department store building on Main Street in Mathews Courthouse. They refurbished it to serve as a headquarters and showroom for their construction business and added furniture and factory-made cabinet displays. Shortly after, Kevin Whitt finished his education at VCU and joined the firm as a kitchen and bath designer and graphic artist. The business began to expand almost immediately. In just a few short months the Whitt family was working not only in Mathews, Gloucester, and Middlesex Counties, but had also expanded into Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, Virginia Beach, and Richmond.
By the early 90s, the company purchased a warehouse in Mathews County to serve as a facility for manufacturing custom cabinets and countertops. Within months the building doubled in size to handle the increased volume of business. In the mid 90s, the company opened a satellite showroom in Williamsburg, Virginia under the management of Kevin Whitt. The business continued to grow and prosper, and in 2008, in addition to manufacturing cabinets, the company established a complete kitchen and bath remodeling division. Today, most of the cabinetry is custom made under the capable management of James Fuller, a veteran of the cabinet industry since 1991.
In 2004, while providing the cabinets for the Eaglescliffe Condo project at Ford’s Colony in Williamsburg, Virginia, Steve and Kevin met Michael Haurand, the builder of these units. This began a long friendship and strong business relationship between Mike, Steve, and Kevin. Over the years, with Kevin’s creative design work and drawings and Mike’s management skills as a contractor, they successfully collaborated on many projects, developed trust and respect for each other, and eventually decided to combine their strengths and talents. Mike and his talented crew of experienced craftsmen joined Whitt Corporation in 2018 with Mike managing the construction division and Chris Hott, who has worked with Mike since 1996, supervising all field operations.
Looking back over the past 40 years, one sees humble beginnings, hard work, challenges conquered, and creative solutions. But, what stands out most are our loyal customers, wonderful employees, and the many friends made along the way. They all make coming to work every day more than just a pleasant experience. They have made it fun!
